HERO Act

By Defiant Mouse Curtis Cox   |   Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Mike Lee one of the golden child's of the Tea Party has introduced the Higher Education Reform & Opportunities (HERO)Act. This act is aimed to expand higher education to low-income and middle-class families.

This act would provide new alternatives to the federal accreditation. Is this a good Idea? On the surface I would say yes! However I think we need to dig deeper into the bill, this is what I found.

The HERO Act would allow all 50 states and DC to develop their own system of accreditation for education institutions, curricula, apprenticeships, programs and even individual courses. It is envisioned to create competition which would drive down the cost of education as different educational entities competed for education dollars thus making education more affordable. In addition to creating competition it would allow students to customize their own curricula and seek targeted skills so they could better compete In today's economy.

Hero has the goal of addressing the needs of students for more diverse training through more diverse opportunities then the current education institutions offer. This new paradigm would overcome the status-quo dogmas that have caused educational institutions and unions to resist change.

Senator Lee believes the HERO Act will "open a floodgate of innovation, provide greater choice, access and opportunities for American students.

However, the HERO Act does not promote a new paradigm in the government status-quo. The Hero Act does not replace the current accreditation system, thus leaving intact the current unconstitutional control of education in the hands of the federal masterminds and violates states rights as sovereign entities. In fact, the new system would make things worse for the states by forcing them to adulterate themselves with Federal fund payoffs and the whole process would be prostituted through forcing states to follow standards of failure like common core. This would happen because the states would have to receive approval of the Secretary of Education for all accreditation organizations.

Senator Lee, what part of "limited government" do you not understand? Where in section 8 of article 1 does the constitution give authority of controlling education to the national government? You yourself said "our current higher education system is controlled by the iron triangle of regional accreditation organizations, the schools and the federal bureaucrats". Now you want to add more layers of control over education? This has never resulted in savings but has always increased costs. This law is sounding like Obamacare with a bunch of shallow promises; like making education more affordable and accessible. Are you going to tell us that we will be saving $2500.00 a year on our education? How about if you like your school you can keep your school?

If you want to make education more affordable get the national government out of education. Breakup this monopoly of government ran education institutions by allowing independent accreditation through bonding and insurance companies make schools accountable for producing acceptable products (graduates) by subjecting them to tart lawsuits and malpractice litigation; eliminate the department of education; the secretary of education; student entitlement programs and eradicate common core; let the free market provide post-secondary education courses, programs, credentials, professional certifications; apprenticeships; private educational institutions, curricula, programs and individual courses without Uncle Sam's involvement. Let there be true competition in the marketplace of education. Let the States require bonding of Professional, certified and apprenticed practitioners, This would cause the bonding companies to accredit educational institutions, material providers, apprenticeship and certify the graduates are not a liability. Because the insurance and bonding companies have skin in the game they would make better accreditation organizations and set better standards of proficiency then the government bureaucracy ever could.
