MONTROSE – Eagle Scouts of Montrose County gathered today at Homestead in Montrose to discuss what it means to be an Eagle Scout. More than 40 Eagle Scouts attended the gathering. There were boys and men who had become Eagle Scouts from every decade from the 1930's to the 2010's.
Eagle Scout and local businessman Jerry Thun spoke about how scouting was always about skills, projects and service when he was a kid. Now, he says, as the owner of Papa Murphy's Take and Bake Pizza, he recognizes that scouting did so much more for him. He says the values, character and principles that he learned as a young man in the scouting program have worked to help him throughout his life.
The Western Colorado Council for the Scouts in Western Colorado announced that they are opening a new scout camp in Gypsum, CO. They said that it will rival the historic and legendary Philmont Scout Ranch in Northern New Mexico. Philmont has become a national and international destination for scouters around the globe. The new scout camp will enable Boy Scouts to work on Merit Badges, rank advancement, their survival and other skills and be a place for them to have a great time.
The Eagle Scouts were asked to make donations to sponsor some of the expenses of scouting and volunteer to help mentor the youth.
